Course Catalog
LOSA Student: Safety Culture Training
LOSA Student is an interactive, scenario-based safety training program designed for those working in laboratories, research environments, engineering facilities, and other technical settings. The curriculum is rooted in the Laboratory Operations Supervisor Academy (LOSA), originally developed by Battelle Memorial Institute and utilized across national laboratories, including Idaho National Laboratory (INL). Now, in partnership with Idaho State University, the program is being adapted specifically for the university environment. Participants gain firsthand experience with an INL-proven approach to safety culture, building practical skills that easily transfer to internships, academic research, and future technical careers. Rather than spending the session listening to a traditional safety lecture, participants will work through realistic situations that can occur in research and laboratory environments. Scenarios may involve equipment hazards, missing or inadequate safety controls, working alone, time pressure, peer pressure, communication problems, procedural shortcuts, and situations where a participant may need to question a more experienced person or stop work when something does not seem right. Participants rotate through roles, observe one another, discuss what happened, and receive feedback from their peers and facilitators. Throughout the training, participants will be introduced to Safe Conduct of Research (SCoR) principles emphasizing personal responsibility for safety, maintaining a questioning attitude, recognizing and evaluating hazards, communicating concerns, learning from experience, and maintaining a healthy respect for what can go wrong. The goal is to help individuals develop the confidence and judgment to recognize problems early, speak up effectively, and make sound decisions even when faced with schedule pressure or competing priorities. The course is highly interactive and is intended to give participants practical experience rather than simply reviewing rules and procedures. The course provides students, staff, faculty, and others with opportunities for role-play, peer observation, group discussion, individualized feedback, and reflection on how safety culture affects real research and technical work. Participants completing the training will also take part in the program evaluation and receive a certificate as part of the session. Progressive Kayaking with Pocatello Parks & Recreation
This class is suitable for beginners or for those out of practice. The first session we’ll paddle on flat water and the second session will be on a section of the Portneuf river. Location to be determined based on water quality and level. Equipment and transportation to launch site included. Inflatable kayaks, paddles and life jackets will be provided. NO discount for your own gear, you must have current invasive species sticker on your kayak. Note: when paddling an inflatable kayak, you will get wet!
Line Dancing: Advanced
If you like a little more challenge to your line dancing, we encourage those who have completed the Beginning/Intermediate classes and are familiar with most line dance steps, to join our Advanced line dance class. We teach new dances and review/reteach oldies and then incorporate different songs/rhythms. These dances are geared toward introducing additional steps/turns to slightly more complicated dances. Bring water if desired.
Chair Yoga
Join me for this chair yoga class! In this class, we will practice a seated asana movement sequence designed to increase both flexibility and strength. Each class will conclude with pranayama (breathwork) and guided Vishoka meditation for relaxation and mindfulness.

That's bad news for everyone, including the US. We'll take a look at what's happening now and what to watch for in the coming years -- because Russia will not be ignored.
Intro to Spanish
This course introduces students to basic Spanish communication skills through the study of essential grammatical structures, everyday vocabulary, and guided conversational practice. Students develop listening comprehension and speaking abilities while learning to interact in common real-life situations. The course also explores the cultures of Spanish-speaking countries, helping students build intercultural awareness alongside linguistic competence. Emphasis is placed on practical language use, comprehension, and confidence in basic oral communication.
Strength Training, an Introduction
Many people shy away from strength training, thinking it takes too much effort – but it doesn’t have to. If your doctor has been encouraging you to get started, here’s your chance to be a good patient and give it a try. Bring a pair of 2- or 3- lb. weights (or even 2 cans of soup), a mat, and a resistance band. If you don’t have a band, they’ll be available for just $4. Join this introductory class as we put on some music and spend around 35 minutes exploring a simple, fun strength-training routine designed to build muscle and support bone health.
Community Health Worker (CHW Core)
The core training course is designed to provide core competencies for Community Health Workers (CHWs), Community Health Representatives (CHRs), and other related paraprofessionals. It includes key concepts of public health, outreach, advocacy, community and individual assessment, social determinants of health, health education, navigating insurance, stages of behavior change, service coordination, and more. The core course is offered for Idaho CHWs in 13-week and accelerated 8-week formats and consists of 48 hours of a blend of live online and asynchronous training. Some sessions of this course will require an access code for registration. Please visit the ISU Community Health Worker Training Academy for more information, or email chw@isu.edu. All CHW training courses are offered in a hybrid online web-based classroom. The Idaho CHW classes meet in a live online classroom (Zoom) regularly during the course term; evenings, from 6 pm-9 pm, on approximately the first, middle, and last weeks of class. These sessions are REQUIRED and must be attended live or arrangements made with instructors. The other weeks students will be working asynchronously (self-paced) and will also be required to choose from 30+ available asynchronous Health Specific Modules and must complete five by the end of class. You can access the online class materials, schedule, and the syllabus from Moodle once they are posted. These materials will generally be posted several weeks before a session starts for each CHW Core class. The CHW Core Training is a prerequisite for the CHW Advanced Training and is also required to complete the Idaho CHW Apprenticeship Program. Community health workers are a vital component of the state and national public health and healthcare workforce. "Community Health Worker" is an umbrella term for several different job titles, including community health advocates, outreach educators, peer leaders, promotores de salud, doulas, and patient navigators. For many decades, CHWs have made significant contributions to community-based health promotion, disease prevention, and maternal-child health support. They have also improved the rate of health insurance coverage for underserved communities and individuals. CHWs improve access to and increase utilization of primary health care, reduce costs of care, improve quality of care, and reduce health disparities. ISU offers this training for those interested in becoming CHWs or CHRs.
