Introduction to Substance Misuse (HSM)
Substance misuse can look different across individuals, families, and communities, and it can be impacted by many factors. In this module, we will focus on what substance use disorders are, how alcohol use can range from lower-risk to unhealthy use, and how to screen for substance misuse using common tools. We will also practice how to raise the topic respectfully, conduct a brief intervention, and identify when and how to refer clients to more intensive support and treatment resources.
Learners will apply foundational knowledge of substance use disorders to recognize risk and symptoms, use basic screening tools, communicate respectfully about substance use, and connect clients with appropriate treatment and referral resources.
Students are encouraged to complete this module within two weeks. HSM access is for six months. A Certificate of Completion can be printed after successful completion of the course.
