Motivational Interviewing (HSM)

Description Registration

In this module, we revisit the use of motivational interviewing (MI) to help your patients embrace positive health changes. Making lifestyle changes can be really tough. As a Community Health Worker (CHW), you can play a key role in empowering patients to make behavior changes by helping them to recognize and overcome individual barriers to making healthier life choices, identify motivating factors for making change, and set realistic personal goals.

As you may recall motivational interviewing is a collaborative, person-centered form of guiding patients to elicit and strengthen their individual motivation for change. During a motivational interview, CHWs take the role of a coach. When done correctly, this behavioral change tool can be very effective and powerful. This module provides a review of what was learned in other modules about MI, as well as some practice scenarios to help you build this important skill.

Students will apply motivational interviewing skills to successfully navigate patients through the healthcare system.

Students are encouraged to complete this module within two weeks. HSM access is for six months. A Certificate of Completion can be printed after successful completion of the course.
