The original townsite was laid out on a grid parallel to the railroad tracks running through the Portneuf valley. The first north/south streets west of the tracks were named for U.S. Presidents and the north/south streets east of the railroad tracks were numbered. The east/west streets north and south of Center Street were alphabetical in both directions. The confusion and controversy surrounding the naming and renaming of Pocatello streets is in many ways a historical melodrama. Learn the stories of the original streets and how they acquired the names they bear today.
