Unpaid family caregivers are an important part of the patient care team. Family caregivers provide a number of services, such as care coordination, wound care, transportation, and interpreting medical instructions, often without professional training or financial reimbursement. It is estimated that family caregivers in Idaho provide $2 billion of unpaid care each year . However, caregiving can be incredibly stressful and family caregivers are at risk for burnout. As a Community Health Worker, it is important to identify family caregivers and provide the necessary support needed for the caregiver to continue their work.
