Elder Abuse Prevention (HSM)
The purpose of this course is to provide an understanding of elder maltreatment, how to prevent it, and what to do when it occurs. Sometimes called “elder abuse,” elder maltreatment affects people worldwide. As a Community Health Worker, it is important to understand some of the risk factors your patients may have and address the barriers that your patients face.
On a global scale, it is estimated that 1 in 6 people over the age of 60 experienced some form of mistreatment in a community setting during the past year. However, only 1 in 23 cases of elder maltreatment are reported. Elder maltreatment can occur anywhere and it is important to recognize the risk factors and “red flags,” as well as what to do if you suspect maltreatment has occurred.
Students will apply knowledge of elder maltreatment in order to successfully navigate patients through the healthcare system.
Students are encouraged to complete this module within two weeks. HSM access is for six months. A Certificate of Completion can be printed after successful completion of the course.
