Many people remember Rachel Carson as the author of Silent Spring, the book that thoughtfully and scientifically pointed out the deadly impact of the unchecked, profligate use of pesticides, such as DDT on the environment. Her book did much to start people thinking about humankind's place in the world and how one action can influence another in the environment. But that is not the only thing Rachel Carson did. She was a careful scientist, a lyrical writer, a loving family member, and a true friend, among other things. This class explores some of the many ways her work continues to influence the world now even 58 years after her death. We will talk about who Rachel Carson was, and how we can cultivate in our own lives what she called The Sense of Wonder.
