The Bonus Army was a group of veterans and their families who came to Washington, DC in 1932 demanding cash-payment redemption of their service certificates from World War I. About 43,000 veterans and their families camped near the mall in our nation's capital beginning early March. On July 28, 1932, they were routed by the US Army using infantry and tanks. Chief of Staff General Douglas McArthur led the military operation under direct orders from President Herbert Hoover.
