British military historian John Keegan writes, “The Second World War is the largest single event in human history.” Fifty to fifty-three  million people perished in WWII (compared to approximately 10 million in WWI. The question “should America enter the war?” was the subject of a great debate that President Roosevelt said “was argued in every newspaper, on every wave length, on every cracker barrel in all the land.” We will study the main events and issues of the “Great Debate of 1940–1941.”
