PhD Candidate, Jeffrey Howard, will address the significant role that folk songs have played in Western culture. He will draw on key historical points, including the popularity of the early modern broadside ballad, the collection of folk songs by Francis James Child and Cecil Sharp in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Jeffrey will discuss the folk revival in the mid twentieth century by artists and musical groups such as Pete Seeger; Woody Guthrie; Peter, Paul and Mary; the Kingston Trio, and others. He will also draw on his own experiences in a folk-singing group in Logan, Utah.
